The Battle of Lexington and Concord was the first battle of the Revolutionary War. The African Americans were selected from the fields to go and fight in the war. The strongest and the fastest were selected to fight for both of the armies. Some were lucky and weren`t selected for the war while others were not. If you were a slave of seven or older, you might be selected to be a drummer boy, a bugle boy, or a messenger. Seven is a very young age to witness a war. If you were of 16 or older, you could have been selected to be a soldier in the war. You would have been untrained and it would have been very hard for you. Most slaves didn`t even have an education so imagine how hard it would be to be in combat. Some slaves were even spies for the other army.
As we mentioned before, The British would set the slaves free when the war was over if they helped them fight in the war. Slaves could escape from their masters and join the British army if they wanted to. Even though this sounds like every slave would do it, not all of them choses this path. First of all, you would have to escape your master and get out of your plantation. Second of all, you may die in the war. If you survived all of the obstacles, when the war was over, you would be a free African American. This was all that African Americans wanted but it would be hard to accomplish.
